CGI Sliding & Patio Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Replacing a failed CGI sliding or patio door part in Los Angeles typically runs $340 – $1,450 installed, depending on whether you’re looking at a roller assembly, a lock set, or a full panel rework. We stock common CGI-compatible hardware on our trucks and can usually swap out a roller or lock the same visit. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: the door starts dragging across the track, or the lock won’t throw, and one day it just stops moving altogether. CGI built these doors to take hurricane-force wind loads, which means the hardware is heavier and more specific than what you’d find on a standard patio slider, and that’s exactly why mismatched parts fail fast.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
CGI’s sliding door lines fall into two main families we see constantly across Los Angeles: the Sentinel series (their workhorse impact-rated slider, available in 2-panel, 3-panel, and 4-panel configurations) and the older Estate collection (a non-impact line that’s since been phased out of production, which is a real problem for owners hunting parts). Estate doors are where we get the most calls because CGI no longer manufactures those tracks and roller housings as a complete set, so you’re sourcing through third-party distributors or machining something to fit. Sentinel doors are easier: current production, documented specs, and readily available OEM components.
The compatibility gotcha we run into weekly: CGI changed its roller housing diameter between the 2015 and 2018 production runs on the Sentinel 2-panel. If your door was installed before 2018 and you order a current OEM roller kit, it won’t seat properly in the bottom rail. We measure the roller wheel and housing bore on site before ordering anything, which takes about five minutes and saves you from buying a part that looks right but isn’t. The other thing to know: CGI doors use a stainless steel tandem roller on the active panel, not the single nylon wheel you’ll find on budget sliders from big-box stores. Aftermarket nylon replacements are cheaper but they shred within a year under the weight of an impact-rated glass panel. We won’t install them.
Signs Your CGI Sliding & Patio Doors Is Failing
- The door drags or shudders when you push it. This is almost always a roller bearing that’s flattened on one side. Once the bearing stops rotating, the wheel grinds flat, and you’re dragging a 200-pound panel across a metal track every time you open the door. It only gets worse.
- The door won’t stay square in the frame. If the top of the door tilts out when you open it, the adjustment screws on the roller housing have likely backed out or stripped. On CGI doors this is more common after a hard slam or an earthquake, both of which Los Angeles delivers with some regularity.
- The lock set won’t throw or requires a hard shove to engage. CGI uses a multi-point locking system on the Sentinel line. When one of the bolt points gets misaligned from a sagging roller, the lock feels like it’s fighting you. Forcing it is how owners snap the lock cylinder.
- You hear a scraping or grinding noise on the track. That’s metal-on-metal wear, usually from a roller that’s seized entirely. The wheel is now acting like a chisel, carving a groove into the aluminum track. If the track is deeply scored, you’re looking at a track replacement on top of the roller job.
- Water pools at the bottom corner after rain. On Los Angeles houses with older CGI installs, the weep holes in the bottom track fill with silt and the drainage stops working. Water backs up onto the interior floor and, given enough time, rots the subfloor. We see this most in hillside neighborhoods like Mount Washington and Silver Lake where runoff is heavier.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we’re quoting on CGI sliding and patio door work in Los Angeles right now. Every one of these is a written line-item price before any work starts, same as every job we do:
- Single roller housing replacement: $340 – $560 installed, including the OEM or matched aftermarket part, track cleaning, and panel re-alignment.
- Full roller set on a 2-panel Sentinel (all four housings): $680 – $980 installed. We replace all four at once because they wear at the same rate and doing one at a time is how you end up calling us again in six months.
- Lock set replacement (multi-point): $420 – $780 installed, depending on whether you need just the cylinder or the full multi-point rail and handle assembly.
- Track replacement with new rollers: $880 – $1,450 installed. This is the job when the track is scored or corroded and the only way to get the door gliding like it should.
What drives the range is the door age and series. Estate panels take longer to shim and re-align because the original hardware is out of production. Sentinel doors are faster and the parts are cheaper to source. Every replacement comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the roller fails or the door starts dragging again within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No phone menu, no service fee, just a scheduled return visit.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things. Look at the bottom track and see if debris is blocking the rollers. Try adjusting the roller screws, which are accessible through the access holes on the bottom face of the door panel. If the door lifts and re-seats better, you’ve bought yourself some time. What you shouldn’t attempt is pulling the panel off the track to access the roller housings. A CGI Sentinel panel with impact glass weighs between 180 and 260 pounds. If it tips while you’re working on it, that’s a hospital trip or a broken door, and neither is worth saving $300. Same goes for the multi-point lock: if you force the mechanism and snap a bolt inside the rail, the door won’t lock at all and you’ve turned a $500 repair into an $800 one. If it’s dragging, grinding, or not locking, call us at (213) 810-3461 and we’ll get someone out to take a look.
FAQs
On a properly maintained Sentinel door, the rollers last 12 – 18 years in Los Angeles conditions. Inland areas with more dust and less humidity, like the San Fernando Valley, tend to wear rollers faster because the grit works its way into the bearing seals. Coastal homes near Playa del Rey or San Pedro get salt-air corrosion on the track but the bearings themselves hold up longer.
No. A collapsed roller bearing can’t be rebuilt on site. The housing is a sealed unit and the wheel is press-fit onto the bearing. Once it fails, the entire roller assembly gets replaced. The good news is that a replacement is a 45-minute job on a 2-panel door, and you won’t need to order a whole new panel.
Most single-panel roller replacements take under an hour from setup to clean-up. A full roller set on a 3-panel or 4-panel door runs two to three hours. Multi-point lock replacements typically take 90 minutes. We’ll give you a real arrival window before we come out, and we hit it.
Our trucks carry common Sentinel roller assemblies, lock cylinders, and track hardware because we’re in and out of Los Angeles homes with CGI doors every week. Estate collection parts usually need to be sourced, which adds two to four business days. We’ll tell you before we order anything and the price is on paper before the part ships.
If your CGI sliding door is dragging, grinding, or won’t lock, call us at (213) 810-3461. We’ll come out, measure the hardware, and hand you a written price before any work starts.
