PGT Window Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you own PGT windows in Los Angeles and a sash, balance, roller, or hardware component has failed, we can match your replacement part to your specific PGT series and install it correctly. Most PGT window replacement work in Los Angeles runs between $185 and $520 per window depending on whether we’re replacing hardware only, a full sash, or the complete window unit. The typical discovery goes like this: a window that used to slide smoothly now binds halfway, or a crank handle spins without moving the vent arm, or the sash drops an inch when you unlock it.
We’re an independent window and door installation company in Los Angeles, not a PGT factory service center, but PGT is one of the eight manufacturer lines we work with every week, which means we can pull the right part, price it honestly, and install it without the runaround.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT built its name on impact-rated windows for coastal Florida, but their product line has moved well beyond hurricane country. In Los Angeles, we most often see PGT WinGuard aluminum and vinyl single-hungs and horizontals, PGT 2200 and 2300 series, and the newer PGT Custom Window and Door vinyl line that’s common in newer L.A. construction and mid-century remodels. The replacement path depends on which family your window belongs to, and that’s where a lot of owners get stuck.
Every PGT window carries a small factory label, usually on the top of the sash or the inside of the frame. That label lists a serial number, the series code, and a manufacturing date, and it’s the single most useful piece of information you can have when you call us. If the label has faded or been painted over, we can still identify most PGT models by taking two measurements: the visible glass width and the total sash width. That’s often enough to narrow the series, because PGT’s WinGuard line, for example, runs wider frame profiles than their standard vinyl lines due to the impact channel. For OEM versus aftermarket, here’s the honest answer: for PGT balances and rollers, we use genuine PGT parts when the window is still under PGT’s own warranty, because mixing third-party hardware can void that coverage. For older PGT units where the warranty has expired, we frequently use high-quality aftermarket balance systems and rollers from Caldwell or Amesbury that match the original spec at 30 to 40 percent less than OEM pricing. We show you both options and the written price before any work starts.
Signs Your PGT Window Replacement Is Failing
- The sash won’t stay up without a prop. PGT single-hung and double-hung windows use block-and-tackle or spiral balances on the sides of the sash. When one side breaks, the sash drops or cocks at an angle, and continuing to force it open will only bend the pivot bar on the other side. That’s a $40 part becoming a $180 repair.
- The window is noticeably harder to slide than it used to be. In Los Angeles, we get about 12 to 14 inches of rain a year and a lot of fine dust and particulate from the freeways. Over time, that grit works into the roller tracks on PGT horizontals, and the rollers themselves, which are nylon or steel depending on the series, wear flat. Lubrication helps for a season, but a worn roller keeps wearing.
- You can feel a draft along the sash edges even when the window is locked. This usually points to compressed or torn weatherstripping, but on PGT impact windows it can also mean the interlock at the meeting rail has shifted out of alignment. Impact windows rely on a tighter compression fit than standard windows, and once that seal loosens, you lose the thermal and acoustic performance you paid for.
- The crank operator turns but the sash doesn’t budge. On PGT casement and awning windows, the gear inside the operator strips over time, especially if the window was opened against a stuck sash or against wind. A stripped operator is a straightforward swap, but it has to be matched to the correct link arm length for your specific PGT series.
- Condensation or haze between the glass panes. That’s a failed insulated glass unit, or IGU. The spacer and seal that separate the two glass panes have broken down, and now moisture is getting in. On PGT units this often starts at the corners. An IGU replacement runs more than a hardware swap but far less than a full window replacement, and we’ll tell you which one actually makes sense for your situation.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For Los Angeles homeowners, here’s what we’re actually seeing in 2025 and 2026:
| Scope | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Balance or roller replacement (single window) | $185 – $290 |
| Operator or lock hardware swap | $120 – $240 |
| Sash replacement (same frame) | $320 – $520 |
| Insulated glass unit replacement (IGU) | $280 – $540 average, depends on glass spec |
| Full PGT window replacement | $850 – $1,600+ installed, based on size and series |
Every one of those numbers includes the part, the labor, cleanup, and our written guarantee on the work. What moves the price is the age of the window, whether the frame is still square, and whether we’re matching impact-rated glass (which has to be ordered to spec) versus standard low-e glass that we stock in common sizes. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, and that price does not change at the door. If the repair fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it’s on every job we do.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of things you can check without any risk to yourself. Look at the label on the sash to get your PGT series and serial number. Note whether the window is level in the opening, because a shifted frame will eat new parts as fast as the old ones. Clean the tracks with a dry brush and see if the symptom changes. After that, I’d be cautious. Replacing a balance in a PGT single-hung requires disengaging a spring-loaded mechanism under tension, and getting it wrong can send a metal pivot bar flying. Replacing an IGU means handling glass that weighs 30 pounds or more and getting the glazing tolerances right so the sash closes cleanly. A window should work as hard as the house it’s in, and when a PGT part fails, the fastest safe fix is a call to (213) 810-3461. We’ll identify the part, quote the written price, and usually have it handled in one visit.
FAQs
PGT windows are built to handle harsher weather than we get in Los Angeles, so the frames often last 25 to 35 years, but the hardware and seals, the balances, rollers, operators, and weatherstripping, typically need attention around year 10 to 18 depending on sun exposure and how often the window gets opened. In neighborhoods like Palms or Mar Vista where the windows face the 405, the real driver is dust and vibration wearing out moving parts faster than the glass or frames. Call (213) 810-3461 and we’ll tell you honestly whether you’re looking at a small hardware swap or something bigger.
Most of the time, the part can be repaired or replaced without touching the frame. Worn balances, stripped operators, and failed rollers are all component-level repairs we do in a single visit. The exception is when the frame itself has warped or the glass seal has failed across a large IGU, at which point you’re weighing a sash or full-unit replacement. We’ll show you both options and let the numbers tell the story, and estimates are free.
A hardware-level repair like a balance or roller swap typically takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half per window, and we bring the common PGT hardware sizes on the truck so we can often finish in a single visit. A full IGU replacement can take a week or two because impact-rated and custom glass units have to be ordered to the exact size and spec. We’ll give you the real arrival window in writing before we schedule anything.
We stock the most common PGT balance types, rollers, locks, and operators in our Los Angeles inventory, because we install PGT windows regularly and we know which parts fail first. Less common series-specific parts get ordered direct, and in those cases we’ll give you a written price and timeline before you commit to anything. Call (213) 810-3461 to check your specific model.
